Shalhevet 68 Maywood CES 27

The Firehawks (25-9) have reached the CIF Division 5 Elite 8 in their first ever trip to the state playoffs. They will play top seeded Verdugo Hills in the Southern regional semifinals on Saturday night.

Farber Hebrew Day hosting Tanzman Tournament

March 3, 2022

The 4th annual David Tanzman Memorial Tournament tips off Thursday at Farber Hebrew Day School in suburban Detroit.

The host Fire will be joined by Fuchs Mizrachi from Cleveland, Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh, Columbus Torah Academy, Atlanta Jewish Academy and Denver Academy of Torah. Fuchs Mizrachi, at #25, is the only tournament participant ranked in the Jewish Hoops America Top 25 and is seeking its third straight Tanzman title.

Farber Hebrew Day began the tournament in 2018, naming it for David Tanzman, one of the founders of the school when it opened as Akiva Hebrew Day School in 1964. The tournament was not held last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. .

The tournament features round robin play through Saturday night with each team playing three games.

The 5th place, 3rd Place and Championship games will be on Sunday.

The 8th-seeded Red Heifers (10-7) fell to the top seed in the opening round of the NEPSAC Class C playoffs. Gahl Rones led Gann with 16 points and Ben Spira had 12.

WEST

Northwest Yeshiva HS 60 Naselle 48

The #19 Lions (17-6) bounced back from the halfcourt buzzer beater that sent them to the elimination round and reached the WIAA 1B Elite 8. Yoel Kintzer scored 22 points and Victor maimon and Dovi goldberg added 12 each. The Lions will play Willapa Valley in the state quarterfinals.

Uxbridge 62 Maimonides 31

The M-Cats fell in the opening round of the MIAA Division 4 playoffs.

CALIFORNIA

Shalhevet 71 Larchmont Charter 15

Yalee Schwartz’s 24 points led four players in double figures for the #4 Firehawks (24-6) as they beat the #13 seed to advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF Division 5 Southern Regional playoffs.

YESHIVA LEAGUE

SKA 63 Ma’ayanot 17

Aliza Toplan scored 12 points, Daphna Steinmetz added 11 and Sari Gross had 10 as the Sonics (12-1) won their eighth straight game to advance to the semifinals. Rapids finish 9-10.

HAFTR 56 SAR 41

Ruthee Rosner scored 18 points and Megan Spivak added 14 to put the Hawks (16-3) into the semifinals. The Sting end the season at 8-9.

Ramaz 55 Central 38

The Wildcats (6-11) were within two at halftime but the Rams (14-7) took control early in the 3rd to reach the semifinals.

Brighton 63 Maimonides 58

Jacob Canner scored 19 points, Josh Saks added 16 and Raanan Gewurz had 14 but the M-Cats (9-9) fell in the opening round of the MIAA Division playoffs.

Haldane 67 Leffell 59

The Lions (7-14) almost upset the top seed in the Section Class C semifinals. Joe Schanzer led Leffell with 19 points and Cory Rabinowitz and Adam Berkowitz added 13 each.

CALIFORNIA

Valley Torah 66 Westchester 52

Johny Dan scored 36 points and Ethan List added 15 on five 3-pointers as the 16th seeded Wolfpack (29-3) beat the top seeded Comets - who were runners up in Los Angeles City D1 sectional - in the opening round of the CIF Division 4 Southern Regionals. Valley Torah next plays #8 Chatsworth in the quarterfinals.
