Avi Halpert scored 27 points, including eight in overtime, as the Firehawks (3-0) withstood a tough effort by the Cougars (1-3). HA led until midway through the third period and then rallied from six down to force the extra session.

The Rams (3-1) hit six 3-pointers before they hit their second 2-point field goal and led the Firehawks by as many as 10 in the first half before Shalhevet rallied in the second.

A balanced attack by the Storm (5-0) put them ahead by 14 at the half and the host Firehawks (4-1) never threatened.

The Firehawks (4-0) used a 10-2 run to close the first half up by three. But the Cougars (2-2) stayed close and trailed by only four heading into the 4th when Shalhevet pulled away for the title.

The game was close throughout with no one leading by more than three after MTA jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Offense was tough to come by as teams combined for just 18 second half points.

The host Firehawks opened up the game on a 34-7 run and were never threatened. Avi Halpert led Shalhevet with 30 points in just under three quarters of play. The Falcons were paced by Lawrence Dweck with 8 points.

Ramaz 58 YULA 52

Rams used an 18-3 3rd quarter to overcome a 4-point halftime deficit and held on to beat the Panthers. Julius Rubinstein led Ramaz with 22 points and Caleb Rosenfeld added 16. Eitan Kavosh paced YULA with 18 points.

The Firehawks trailed by 12 with under a minute left in the 2nd quarter but scored the final five points before the break and then took control with a 34-9 run to start the second half. Talia Tibi led Shalhevet with 18 points, Talia Tibbs added 17 and Yalee Schwartz had 11. Maayan Zakheim and Jenny Kagan each scored 15 points and Maya August added 14.

Glouberman Tournament Tips off 2021-22 season for 10 boys, 8 girls teams

Magen David had a scaled-down version of its preseason tournament last month but the 2021-22 Jewish Hoops America season gets underway for good this week at the 7th annual Steve Glouberman Tournament in Los Angeles.

The tournament hosted by Shalhevet starts Wednesday and features 10 boys teams and 8 girls teams. Preliminary games run through Thursday night. Quarterfinals and girls semifinals are on Friday and the boys semifinals, consolations and championship games will be played on Saturday night.

Shalhevet, YULA, Berman HA, HA Miami, Frisch, HAFTR and Ramaz will compete in both the boys and girls tournaments. They will be joined by the boys teams from Northwest Yeshiva High School, Flatbush and TABC and the girls team from Ida Crown.

This year’s tournament marks a return to just varsity teams participating. The 2020 tournament was postponed until this past spring because of the pandemic. It was a hybrid event that included alumni teams, all star teams and even junior varsities.

Fallas, Remer, Zimmerman, Dan Win 2019-20 Jewish Hoops America Awards

Albert Fallas of YULA and Zeev Remer of Shalhevet were co-Players of the Year in Jewish Hoops America for the 2019-20 season.

The Coach of the Year was David Zimmerman of Yavneh Dallas and the Underclassman of the Year was Johnny Dan of Valley Torah.

Fallas, a senior, and Remer, a junior, tied in the voting among JHA coaches, with each getting the same number of first-place votes.

Fallas averaged 16.6 points per game and led the Panthers to an 18-10 record and their first ever sectional semifinal.

Remer led the Firehawks with 18.6 points per game as a junior. He followed that up this year with a 27 point average as the Firehawks became the first-ever Jewish team to play for a California regional championship. Remer finished a stellar 4-year varsity career with 2,019 points, only the third player in Jewish Hoops America’s 15 years to surpass 2K. He was JHA’s Underclassman of the Year in 2019.

Because so few teams played in 2020-21, there are no individual awards for this year. Instead we are recognizing some who did play by upgrading their awards from 2019-20 or adding them as an honorable mention. Those instances are marked by an asterisk on the list below. All are listed by the class they were in in 2019-20.

Joining Fallas and Remer on the 1st Team All Jewish Hoops America were Yeshiva League seniors Max Zakheim of Frisch, Albert Nsiri of Magen David and Ricky Sutton of Heschel.

The 2nd Team included seniors Matthew Jedwab of HAFTR, Elie Lowenstein of Berman Hebrew Academy, Jake Silvers of Rochelle Zell and Jacob Stein of HA Miami and juniors Zevi Samet of TABC and Jesse Spear of Maimonides.

The 3rd Team was seniors Jackie Haber of Shaare Torah and Mason Schwaber of Yavneh Dallas; juniors Ariel Gershman of Jewish Day School, Jacob Pofsky of Shalhevet and Jo Jo Velenski of DRS; and freshman Johnny Dan of Valley Torah.;

Zimmerman led Yavneh Dallas to the TAPPS 3A championship in Texas, the first time a Jewish high school team in the United States ever won a state title. The Bulldogs finished the season 31-3, including 18 straight wins to end the year.

Runners up for Coach of the Year were YULA’s Vince Oliver and SAR’s Rafi Halpert. Others considered were Chris Cole of Beren Houston, Ryan Coleman.of Shalhevet, Ben Falk of Barrack Hebrew Academy, Michael Foonberg of Denver Jewish Day, Ed Gelb of Maimonides, Tzvi Goldberg of Hillel-NJ, Greg Kalutsky of Fasman Yeshiva, Jan Sandusky of Shaare Torah and Lior Schwartzberg of Valley Torah.

The race for top underclassman came down to a pair of Los Angeles hoopsters, with Dan, a freshman who averaged 15 ppg and won a John Wooden Award as top player in CIF Southern Section Division 5, getting the nod over Milken sophomore Jac Mani.

Others considered were freshmen Gavin Foonberg of Denver Jewish Day and Avi Halpert of Shalhevet and sophomores Abie Bonkovsky of Posnack Jewish Day, Jonathan Levy of Katz YHS and Hymie Salem of HAFTR.

With the abrupt ending of the season before the 2020 Sarachek Tournament and in the middle of the Yeshiva League semifinals, Jewish Hoops America did not award a #1 team for the 2019-20 season. Shalhevet held the top spot when the season concluded.
