|Saturday night means Rivalry Night in Jewish Hoops America.
There are several big regional tilts after Shabbos this weekend,in the Boston suburbs, Philadelphia and two in LA.
Maimonides hosts Gann Academy in Brookline. The M-Cats, ranked #16, have won their first four games and are the only remaining unbeaten team in JHA. They will look to get more outstanding efforts from their senior leaders, Zach Jaffe, Ben Zak and Avishai Alge. The 4-3 Red Heifers will rely on leading scorer Danny Mael and hope the recent strong play of Jared Rodman and Dave Roberts continues.
In Philadelphia, Saturday night will mark the first matchup between Barrack Hebrew Academy (1-5) and the city's other Jewish high school since the Stern Blue Storm became the Kohelet Kingsover the summer. Kohelet (2-3) features Leibel Greenberg and Jake Marcus, and the Cougars will counter with the Gabbay Bros. - Dan and Ron.
The best game of the night may be #2 YULA vs #22 Shalhevet. The Firehawks(9-2) already have an early-season win over Milken, are riding a seven-game win streak and have blown out some recent opponents. Shalhevet has a dynamic duo in Yossi Halpert and Joey Fallas, but can they contend with YULA's Jack Gindi? The second leading scorer in JHA has five games of 35 or more points this season, including three the past two weeks.
Finally, there's the Westside League matchup between #7 Valley Torah and New Community Jewish. The Wolfpack, with 6-foot-9 Aaron Liberman dominating at both ends of the court, have won all their games since two early season losses, including last Saturday night's statement win over then #1 YULA. They face a hungry Jaguar squad led by Jordan Perlman and Brandon Jackson that has shown marked improvement since Coach Motti Meisels took over the program after leaving Valley Torah last year.
